An inquest recently took place at Bolton Coroner’s Court to determine the events leading up to Suzanne Greenwood’s tragic death.
Suzanne Greenwood was a popular, bright and intelligent teacher who unfortunately suffered from a complex psychiatric disorder. Mrs Greenwood struggled with insomnia and became addicted to a sleeping drug which she purchased online to help with her insomnia and depressive symptoms.
The court heard that Mrs Greenwood was treated with anti-depressants prescribed by a doctor from The Priory Hospital, in Altrincham, after spending 28 days there in October 2012. However, she was never formally discharged and this was not communicated to her GP.
In November 2014, a nurse practitioner advised Mrs Greenwood how to reduce her medication at her request, yet these changes were not discussed with her psychiatrist from The Priory.
Mrs Greenwood’s body was found hanged at Haslam Park in Bolton on 23rd December 2014.
Recording an open verdict, Coroner Alan Walsh raised concerns about the availability of illicit drugs and medications online.
He said would write to The Priory to request a review of ‘protocols and procedures’ in relation to patient discharge procedures there.

“An open verdict was given by the Coroner, and we are grateful to him for investigating the cause of Suzanne’s death.
“Whilst Suzanne’s family feel that they have received many answers today, there remain important questions regarding the standard of care she received from those involved in her treatment.”
